The Rarest Atmosphere on Earth
Posted on February 10th 2010 | By Ambassador
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. (1Jn 1:3 KJV)
koinōnia: partnership, that is, (literally) participation, or (social) intercourse, or (pecuniary) benefaction: – (to) communicate (-ation), communion, (contri-), distribution, fellowship.
I don’t know who first said, “Fellowship is two or more persons in the same ship.” That’s cute. However, I tell you, fellowship is much, much more.
Do you know what it is? If you do, you know more than I — It’s indefinable. It’s more than the sum of its parts. It’s rare — yes, truly rare.
Koinonia cannot be experienced except in union with God and Jesus Christ. A bible seminar isn’t necessarily koinonia. A church picnic isn’t necessarily koinonia. An Easter pageant isn’t necessarily koinonia.
Koinonia is stepping through the wardrobe into another world, together. Koinonia is knowing more than your senses tell. Koinoinia Is being involuntarily transparent, and unashamed. It’s knowing and being known, yet accepting and sharing unconditionally.
Now you know why it’s rare: because it exists only in the ratified atmosphere of heaven upon an oasis of love, where pride is acid rain.
Visit the Commonwealth of Christ to learn about Koinonia, communion, and heavenly citizenship. Who knows, perhaps you inoculate your family, friends or church?

Koinonia by definition could be considered in opposition to two people just sharing the same space. This idea of sharing space but not being in fellowship is so keenly depicted in the painting Nighthawk by American artist Edward Hopper. I saw it at the Art Institute in Chicago yesterday. The four individuals in his diner are almost touching in proximity, but he takes great care to depict the fact that they are absolutely together, but alone. It really struck me.
